North Eastern Alberta has many rural homesteads and I have travelled this area many times to sketch and photograph potential subjects. In this painting the long shadow of the roof on the front of the barn attracted me to the scene. I sketched the barn and the house in an area just outside of Smoky Lake Alberta.

Many years ago I passed through Bonnyville while on a camping trip. I took photos of this old homestead on the west side of the town which, at that time did not have the "Sway Back Roof" I did paint it then however just lately I was in that area picking up a border collie from a breeder and low and behold the roof was "Sway Back" I had to paint it!

Malcolm Stewart farmed in Bittern Lake Alberta.He raised sheep and trained Border Collies to herd and control his stock. He also entered his dogs in "Stock Dog" competitions winning many trophies with the dog's energy, stamina and working drive.During the many years of his life he had some favorites.In this composition I have depicted three outstanding dogs.Maid, Dot and Bob.
