Workmates
Border Collies are considered by many as the most intelligent dog among all breeds. Their original ancestors were from Scotland however, they were eventually cross bred with sheep dogs brought to Britain during the Roman Conquest. The Border Collie is now bred for it's sheep-herding abilities and for this reason is admired around the world.

Mother's Pride
For me Border Collies are always a good subject. A Mother Collie with her pups is even better. Through a dog trainer and breeder a family friend from Bittern Lake got our daughter interseted in Border Collies. We have found this breed of dog to be well behaved and quite gentle to children.
In this painting the pups have gathered by the mother's side after noticing some thing strange in the distance. Is it you!

The Collie's Brood
Border Collies are well known for their herding abilities and keen intelligence. Although their herding skills are a modified version of the hunting skills of the wolf the Collie mainly herds sheep and at times can be seen using their skills on young children.

The Crofter's Collie
Border Collies are bred for their herding ability. they originated many centuries ago in the border regions of Scotland and England.
No matter what breed the dog, a mother with pups is always a pleasant memory.
In this painting I have placed the mother and pups at the gate of a croft on the Isle of Uist in Scotland.

The Pups all seem to have their attention fixed in the same area while the mother scans the distant hills, perhaps watching for stray sheep

Campbell River Collies - Original Sold
The original ancestors of the collie were from Scotland and eventually cross bred with sheepdogs brought to Britain during the Roman conquest. The border collie is now bred for its sheep-herding abilities and for this reason it is admired throughout the world. It is a sensitive anxious to please dog which grows deeply attached to its owner and family showing particular affection to children.

The painting: during a visit to Campbell River, my friend "Scotty" Stewart, who is well known for his knowledge and training of border collies, decided to feed the latest litter. They slipped their heads through the spars of an old gate as he passed by and their facial expressions reflected such affection that the moment had to be captured.

Borders and Boots
It is always enjoyable to paint Border Collies and even more so the pups of this very intelligent breed. My friend Scotty Stewart of Campbell River is one of the most respected breeders of Collies and it is because of him that I am able to find the great subjects.

In this painting three pups were sitting obediently by the door of the wood shed in Scotty's yard while he put some more mature dogs through their paces. It amazed me to see a group of young dogs emain at the door of the shed while so much was going on just a few yards away.

The Master's Return ● Scottish Terriers
Originally, the West Highland White Terrier was bred in Portalloch, Scotland, and since it was easy to train, was used mainly for hunting. This hardy, sturdy and intelligent little 'Westie' has become an excellent companion dog and its popularity has blossomed in Canada and America.
The Black Scottish Terrier, a separate breed entirely, was also bred as a hunter and over the years showed it was a fearless adversary against foxes and badgers.

In this painting I situated both dogs (Corrie & Rhona) at the edge of a highland pathway waiting for their 'Masters Return'.

The background is an area of Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran, one of the scenic beauty spots of Scotland and the original home of the dogs' owner.

Waiting for Spot - Border Collies
Malcolm Stewart farmed in Bittern Lake Alberta. He raised sheep and trained Border Collies to herd and control his stock. He also entered his dogs in "Stock Dog" competitions winning many trophies with the dog's energy, stamina and working drive.During the many years of his life he had some favorites. In this composition I have depicted three outstanding dogs.Maid, Dot and Bob. Malcolm is looking down the road anticipating sheep thundering over the small rise with Spot hot on their heels bringing them home to the fold.I had no references sketches of Spot to include him in this painting - Thus - "Waiting for Spot."
